4 Ways to Build an Amazing Live Event Production Team | TSV Sound & Vision
by Mitch Aldridge, Director of Production
It takes a Dream Team
A live event is only as good as the team producing it. Through the years, I’ve found that prioritizing technical proficiency, adaptability, and strong communication skills is crucial is finding the perfect independent contractors and new team members.
The Foundation of Expertise
Technical proficiency is non-negotiable. In the realm of event production, where precision and expertise are critical, every team member must possess a strong technical foundation. This ensures that they can handle the intricacies of their roles, whether it's managing complex audio-visual setups, handling lighting rigs, or operating event software and hardware. The ability to troubleshoot technical issues on the fly is invaluable, minimizing downtime and ensuring the smooth execution of events.
This isn't to say we don't bring on folks without high technical proficiency. The desire and motivation to learn and pitch in wherever necessary is just as important. We encourage aspiring AV techs and those early in their career to work with us on shows so they can be exposed to the tech and work with our professionals to get hands on experience in the field. Our core team is made up of passionate and skilled individuals who enjoy leveling up those who share interests in the live events world. Growing technical skill is just as important to us as maintaining one's technical proficiency.
Adaptability During a Live Event
Event production is an industry where change is among the only constants. Unforeseen challenges and last-minute adjustments are part of the daily grind. Therefore, adaptability is a key trait we look for in potential team members. Individuals who can think on their feet, pivot quickly, and come up with creative solutions under pressure are invaluable assets. Their flexibility allows them to seamlessly integrate into our established workflows, regardless of the unique demands of each event.
Communication: The Glue That Holds the Team Together
While technical skills and adaptability are crucial, strong communication skills are what truly bind the team. Effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, reducing misunderstandings and fostering a collaborative environment. It enables team members to share ideas, provide constructive feedback, and support each other. In the fast-paced world of event production, clear and concise communication can be the difference between success and chaos.
Quality Over Quantity
A common misconception in event production is that having a larger team guarantees success. However, our experience has shown that the quality and cohesion of the team matter more than sheer numbers. A well-coordinated, skilled, and communicative team can overcome challenges more effectively than a larger, less synchronized one. Each member brings a high level of expertise and a collaborative spirit, making the team greater than the sum of its parts.
We focus on assembling a team that can work efficiently together. This involves careful selection of individuals who not only excel in their technical roles but also fit well within our team dynamics. We seek out those who demonstrate a willingness to collaborate, share knowledge, and support their colleagues. By prioritizing these qualities, we build teams that are resilient, innovative, and capable of delivering exceptional results under pressure.
